To no surprise, the Steelers are expected to close in on a deal with offensive tackle Zach Banner, according to Dale Lolley of DKPittsburghSports. The deal could be announced as soon as Tuesday.
Banner told Mark Kaboly of The Athletic last month that Mike Tomlin told him during the season last year that he's looking for him to be a starter at one of the offensive tackle positions in 2021.
“Coach T looked at me and said, ‘You are my answer for 2021, so I need you to focus on your knee, don’t worry about anything else.’ That was the best thing that I could’ve heard,” Banner said.
Banner also told Kaboly that he's betting on himself once again in 2021.
“I had a conversation with my agent, and we will keep that on the hush-hush right now, but yes, I am betting on myself again some way, somehow,” Banner said.
Guard/tackle Matt Feiler signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Chargers on Monday, so a starting spot at one of the offensive tackle positions is there for the taking.
Banner is currently training out in Redondo Beach, Calif. at Allegiate Gym to get ready for the 2021 season after suffering a season-ending ACL tear in Week 1 against the Giants this past year.
Banner also made a post on Twitter last night indicating that he got a new deal done. Banner said a few weeks ago that he will be off social media until he gets a new contract.
