Memphis running back Kenneth Gainwell has been in contact with the Steelers lately throughout the draft process. Today we'll be breaking down the young runner by taking a look at some stats, some film, and his projected draft price.
Gainwell opted out of the 2020 college football season to prepare for the NFL draft. However, in 2019 he was absolutely electric as the starting running back for Memphis. Let's take a look at his stat line. 231 carries for 1,459 rushing yards and 13 rushing TDs averaging 6.3 YPC. Those are some nasty numbers, but the best part about Gainwell is his incredible receiving profile. In 2019 he put up 59 receptions for 610 yards and 3 TDs through the air. The most impressive thing about this run is that he started over Antonio Gibson. Gibson, who was drafted in the 3rd round last year by Washington has blossomed into a very talented NFL back, and if Gainwell was starting over Gibson? Watch out.
Now let's take a look at Gainwell's play style on film. He's an absolute blast to watch, spinning and swerving, making crazy fun sequences and highlights. He has awesome home run play potential. He runs bigger than his size and has great burst and vision.
Gainwell would be an awesome 3 down back fit in the Steelers offense and would come at a cheaper price tag than a guy like Etienne or Najee Harris. I project Gainwell to be a late day 2 draft pick, and I hope the Steelers take a hard look at him.
