This offseason's head coach cycle is now over with Dennis Allen being named as the Saints' new head coach this afternoon.
Nine head coaches were hired during the cycle and the Steelers will face three of the teams with new head coaches in 2022 -- the aforementioned Allen of the Saints, Josh McDaniels of the Raiders and Mike McDaniel of the Dolphins.
McDaniels was hired by the Broncos as their head coach in 2009, but it was a short stint and he was fired before the 2010 season even ended. After a year with the Rams, McDaniels went back to the Patriots and served as the offensive coordinator from 2012-2021. Prior to being hired by Denver, McDaniels was the Patriots' offensive coordinator from 2006-2008. McDaniels is still only 45 years old.
McDaniel, 38, is a young innovative coach who is credited for putting together the 49ers' creative run game. McDaniel was the 49ers' run game coordinator from 2017-2020 and was their offensive coordinator in 2021. McDaniel is a first-time head coach.
Allen was the Raiders head coach from 2012-2014, so he'll get his second head coach opportunity with the Saints. Allen was the Saints' defensive coordinator from 2015-2021. Allen was the favorite to replace Sean Payton.
The Steelers face the Raiders and Saints at Heinz Field in 2022, while they face the Dolphins in Miami.
