It appears that the Steelers are not interested in signing free agent strong safety Tyrann Mathieu, despite frequent buzz on social media that the Honey Badger would be an ideal fit with the Steelers.
Kevin Colbert pretty much shut down the Mathieu rumors when speaking with members of the Pittsburgh media on Sunday.
"Our preference is always to add players coming off of their first contract or as close to their first contract as they can be," Colbert said via a phone call while reporters were gathered at the NFL Owners Meetings in Palm Beach, Fla. Colbert is attending pro days this week, so he's not down in Florida.
Colbert also mentioned that he believes the Steelers currently have starting-caliber players for 24 of 25 positions. The lone vacancy is at strong safety. You can also add slot receiver in there, as well.
However, the point remains that it's unclear whether Terrell Edmunds will come back to the Steelers. Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette thinks the Steelers would consider re-signing Terrell Edmunds, but only if he doesn’t get a substantial offer in free agency. Dulac says they are not going to chase him with contract offers. There's been no news on other teams expressing interest in Edmunds thus far in free agency.
