The 2021 NFL draft was very deep in many different positions especially the offensive line, wide receiver, and cornerback position. There were some really good football players who were not able to get drafted because of how deep the draft was, but they managed to sign on as an undrafted free agent once the draft ended. One high-profile football player who slipped out of the draft without being drafted is CB Shakur Brown. Could he be the Steelers replacement for Mike Hilton?
Through 26 career games, Shakur has had 2 sacks and 1 interception. During his time in the Big Ten, Pro Football Focus gave him the highest coverage grade of any cornerback. NFL.com even rated him as a fourth-round pick going into the 2021 NFL draft. So Shakur is a very talented cornerback who was snubbed because of a deep draft. I'm glad the Steelers decided to sign him as an undrafted free agent because he could very well be Mike Hilton's replacement going forward in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers need to find a good slot CB and they seem to like James Pierre going into the 2021 season, but Shakur Brown could give him a run for his money in camp. He did lead the Country in interceptions per game with five interceptions in seven games in 2020. Even Ryan Wilson of CBS said he had him ranked as a 3rd round cornerback going into the 2021 NFL draft on 93.7 the fan today.
Andrew Filipponi believes Shakur Brown could be the steal of the Steelers 2021 NFL draft. Let's hope he can earn a starting role and make as much noise as Mike Hilton did because the Steelers desperately need CB help going into the 2021 season. During his time with Michigan State Shakur had 38 solo tackles, 16 assists, 54 total tackles, 7 interceptions, and 2 sacks. He only played 3 seasons with Michigan State before going into the NFL draft as a Junior. If the Steelers can turn him into a stud as they did with Mike Hilton I would agree he would be the steal of the draft because they potentially got him for nothing.
