The Reddit rumor ended up being true. Former Bears offensive lineman Rashaad Coward is expected to sign with the Steelers, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
Coward is a former defensive lineman who worked his way into the starting lineup on the Bears' offense. Coward started 15 games at guard in the last two years for Chicago.
Coward was a restricted free agent this offseason, but the Bears decided not to tender him, which made him a free agent.
Coward will be a depth player on the offensive line, which is much needed with Matt Feiler signing with the Chargers in free agency. The Steelers signed guard/tackle Joe Haag for depth on the offensive line last week as well and signed center/guard B.J. Finney. Coward also has the ability to play tackle.
Coward expressed his excitement about joining the black and gold on Twitter.
Coward went undrafted out of Old Dominion in 2017 and signed on with Chicago shortly after the draft. Coward told Adam Winkler of WTKR News 3 in Hampton, Va. that Mike Tomlin remembered him from the 2018 Hampton Roads Youth Foundation camp at which Rashaad volunteered. Tomlin is from the Newport News-Hampton area of Virginia and attends the Hampton Roads Youth Foundation camp every summer.
In regards to the Reddit rumor, Coward was caught on an open mic during a game of "Call of Duty: Warzone" that his wife was playing. She was teamed with a random player, who reportedly heard Coward talking about a potential deal with the Steelers in the background and posted what was said on Reddit.
Brian Adkins, who is Coward's agent, confirmed on Twitter that Coward's wife, Tally, is an entertaining gamer. Tally agreed.
