As expected, Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert are at the Alabama pro day today. They're not only there, but RSVP'd along with other pairs of head coaches and general managers, according to Andrew Groover of the Associated Press.
There are nine prospects at the Alabama pro day who will be working out in front of all of the top NFL talent evaluators.
All-world running back Najee Harris won't be going through workouts at the pro day, however, but he'll still be there. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Harris’ flight from Dallas to Birmingham was cancelled last night due to lightning, so with no other travel options available, Harris drove nine hours to make it to Alabama’s Pro Day by 10 a.m. today.
Harris displays incredible commitment by driving nine hours just to see his teammates workout at a pro day. I'm sure Tomlin and Colbert will take notice of that when evaluating Harris'character. He could also be the future bell-cow running back for the Steelers if he's still available at No. 24 overall in this year's draft. The Steelers finished last season dead last in rushing yards per game (84.4) and yards per carry (3.6). The offensive line play was an issue last year as well, but it's crucial that the Steelers get a feature running back in this year's draft. The backfield of James Conner, Benny Snell Jr. Jaylen Samuels and Anthony McFarland Jr. last year was just filled with mediocrity.
Conner is a free agent and has not been signed yet. It's unlikely that the Steelers would re-sign him. A trio of Snell, Samuels and McFarland isn't very promising, so it should be a no-brainer for the Steelers' brass to select an elite running back like Harris if he's still on the board at No. 24 overall in this year's draft.
