Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports released his quarterback rankings by tiers this morning and he has Ben Roethlisberger ranked as a tier 6 quarterback and under the "Good Luck" category with quarterbacks Daniel Jones, Sam Darnold and Andy Dalton. That tells you all you need to know about how La Canfora feels about Roethlisberger.
La Canfora has really never been a fan of Roethlisberger, but he has been even harsher on him the last few years.
"I could see the Steelers experimenting with a new QB by midseason," La Canfora wrote. "When you take that kind of paycut to stick around to try to go out on something other than the terms of that ugly playoff loss to the Browns, chances are things won't get much better. Offensive line looks shaky at best. Lack of mobility a big problem. I just don't see this going well and things have been trending down since 2019."
La Canfora having Roethlisberger ranked below tier 5 quarterbacks like Jimmy Garoppolo, Jared Goff, Jameis Winston and Teddy Bridgewater is a major stretch. He should be at least ranked as a tier 2 quarterback, which is labeled as "Top pros, proven winners." I mean, he has Matthew Stafford and Matt Ryan ranked as proven winners. ... Roethlisberger has a by far better resume when it comes to winning than both Stafford and Ryan. I don't think Roethlisberger is a tier 1 quarterback anymore and he didn't look good down the stretch last season, but to have him ranked in tier 6 is just way too low.
