The Watt brothers are constantly in competition with each other. Always taking shots at one another. Isn't this what brothers are supposed to do? J.J. Watt was recently interviewed during the Texans offseason and said he would not consider T.J. Watt a peer until T.J. had as many Defensive Player of the Year Awards as him.
“Once he has three defensive player of the year awards, I’ll start to see him as a peer,” J.J. Watt said Monday, smiling.
“I’m really excited about it,” J.J. Watt said of T.J. “I love watching him play. It’s fun to watch. It’s fun to have conversations with him. It’s fun to talk in the offesason, work in the offesason. Obviously, Derek being on the other side of the ball, we can’t necessarily have the same conversations about what it takes to rush the passer and things like that."
J.J. was snubbed last season from becoming the Defensive Player of the Year by the NFL. J.J. Watt has three Defensive Player of the Year awards but has missed 19 games in three seasons. J.J. is turning 31 whereas T.J. Watt is turning 26. T.J. almost broke the Steelers all-time franchise record last season. T.J. Watt also was named first-team All-Pro last year.
“For me and T.J., playing the same position, fighting for the same things, trying to one up each other at all times, there’s nothing better than that. . . . Me and T.J., personally, there’s obviously a whole lot of competition going on, and I have no plans on letting my little brother win anytime soon.”
T.J. has just begun his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers in a system that turns linebackers into studs. J.J. Watt has only played 32 games in four seasons and has 21.5 Sacks. T.J. has 34.5 sacks in three seasons with the Steelers. Yes, J.J. Watt loves to challenge his little brothers and it is in all good clean fun, but deep down inside J.J. knows T.J. is capable of catching him. If T.J. Watt continues on pace in Pittsburgh he will become one of the best defensive players in the NFL. Only time will tell how big of a superstar T.J. Watt will become with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
