Inside linebacker Avery Williamson hasn't been signed in free agency yet, however, he made a post on Instagram on Monday night that might indicate he's re-signed with the Steelers or perhaps another team. Being that he's in a Steelers uniform and his caption was "More to come," suggests it would be with the Steelers if that's the case.
This is all speculation, however, and could mean nothing. Maybe he's just waiting for his next opportunity in the NFL. The Steelers do need depth at the inside linebacker position behind Devin Bush and Rober Spillane, especially with Vince Williams being released as a cap casualty last month to save the team $4 million in cap space. So, if the Steelers can get Williamson on a cheap deal, it wouldn't be a bad move.
Williamson was acquired by the Steelers via trade with the Jets after Week 8 of last season. Williamson played in nine games last year for the Steelers, including the playoffs, and started four games. He recorded 52 total tackles, 37 of them being solos, three tackles for losses and two quarterback hits with the Steelers in 2020.
Williamson, 29, was a fifth-round pick by the Titans in 2014 out of Kentucky and was with Tennessee until 2017 and then signed with the Jets in March of 2018. In his six-year career, Williamson has compiled 607 total tackles, 392 of them being solos, 15.5 sacks, 29 tackles for losses, four interceptions, 17 passes defended, five forced fumbles, three fumbles recoveries and 27 quarterback hits.
