Maurkice Pouncey announced his retirement yesterday. A couple seasons ago, it seemed like Ben Roethlisberger and his center would walk off into the sunset together. However, it seems like they might not be doing this anymore. It would be cool if center and Quarterback did a joint press conference and walked into the sunset together. However, it doesn’t look like that will be happening given the announcement from Pouncey.
Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers haven’t seemed to have met yet in order to discuss his salary cap impact. Which is honestly quite surprising, and I wish they already would have met. Especially with JJ Watt sitting there as a Free-Agent. There is no time to waste and the Steelers need to find some money quickly in order to make this contract work with JJ.
However, is there an off chance that Ben decides to hang it up? Possibly. The last few games of the season were quite abysmal, and Ben Roethlisberger doesn’t deserve all the blame. However, some of that falls on him with some of the spotty decision making on the field that resulted in some turnovers.
Ben Roethlisberger has to feeling so many different emotions after he failed to convince his All-Pro center to come back and play for another season. So, Big Ben is apparently trying to contemplate life without his good friend. Perhaps, this might be the season to hang it up and give the Steelers some much needed relief. If not, take a pay cut and help the team out and we can build a team around him.
